Victorio Libre
2012
Victorio was an Apache Chief and warrior that was taken prisoner but he escaped and went to defend his people. He never surrounded and because he wanted to be free and defend his people he was hunted by the US and Mexican Armies. He was finally encircled in the mountains of Chihuahua in a site called "Tres Castillos" by General Joaquin Terrazas and massacred with his people. Other Indian Chiefs are better known by the general public but none has been braver or more truly a free man than Victorio. I painted him young and free using as reference the only known photo of him on his horse up in the mountains.
